Actor Profile & BTS: Ted Powers as Thomas Stockman – MESSENGER, 2026

INTRODUCING TED POWERS

Directed by Andra Kelly, this is Powers’ first time being part of a DSP production!

Ted Powers as Thomas Stockman, with wife, Kate, played by Jennie Archambault.

A little about Ted Powers:

I love the act of creation. The joy in creating a character, and of interacting with all the collaborators – both onstage and offstage – to bring the story of a play to life – and the final ingredient – the audience.

An important quote of Thomas Stockman, and what it says to Powers:

“The good news is we still have time! If we act now.”

This reflects Thomas’ belief that things can be fixed, that change can occur.

There are ways Powers empathizes with Thomas:
I admire his bullshit detector. He can spot a lie at ten paces.
There are also the elements which separate him from his character:
This may be a ‘spoiler’ but I’ve never had the challenge of portraying someone who is manic-depressive or bi-polar.  I am wary about falling into a stereotypical depiction of this illness.

Touching on this season’s theme of Untangling Love:

In Messenger, Thomas is unable to untangle love. His zeal and passion for truth, justice, and environmentalism pushes away the people closest to him.

As the month progresses, actors begin to move away from their books to further refine their blocking, body language, and emotion.  Powers has been developing the highs and lows of the dynamic and passionate Thomas Stockman, who brings an enviable dedication to his cause — despite his flaws.

Archambault has also been enjoying the discovery of uncovering the layers to this plot and its characters as the team wades through each rehearsal.

More and more does she find key lines to contextualize Kate Stockman’s relationship with her at times unpredictable husband, as well as the perspective with which she understands another character, journalist Jimmy Hall, an old friend of Thomas’, pictured here being played by swing, Joey Dillane.

No show stands without a team;  meet Stage Manager April Hogarth, who has been hard at work, accompanied by her Assistant Stage Manager and Swing, diligent Joey Dillane!  Behind them is the deeply focused Director, Andra Kelly, providing notes to her actors on stage.

April Hogarth (right) and Joey Dillane (center left) at the ready! An entrenched Andra Kelly sits behind them, with actor David Mouti on the left.
